The baggage policy of American Airlines is as follows,

Checked Baggage.

The number of bags allowed for different cabin classes is as follows,

  • Flagship First- 3 bags.

Child Policy

American Airlines has a very transparent Child Policy in place to ensure safe and comfortable travel with children on their aircrafts. They offer priority boarding to families that have children below 2 years. The airline allows only 1 carry-on diaper bag per child.

Nursing mothers can travel with a breast pump and soft-sided cooler of breast milk other than their carry-on baggage and personal item. If you're traveling with children under 15 years, you must ensure to book seats together as every children must be seated with their parent or guardian on the airline. If your child is 2 years or above, you must buy them a ticket and a seat.

If you’re traveling with an infant under 7 days, the airline requires doctor’s consent to onboard them. You can only carry one infant on your laptop, if you're traveling with more than 1 infant below 2 years age, you must seat another infant in a seat next to you and the seat and ticket for the infant is chargeable.

If you're flying with infants and you provide them with safety seats then, you cannot sit near the exit and emergency rows. Ideally, you must seat your infants near the window seat and they must remain in their seat during take-off, landing, and taxi. Safety seats are not allowed on First and Business Class in American Airlines.

With one American Airline ticket, you can check 1 stroller and 1 car seat for free. If your stroller is over 20 pounds, it must go into the checked baggage. If you have both a stroller and car seat then only one can be carried to your cabin.

Pet Policy

American Airlines allow pets to travel either in cabin or in their cargo. They only allow cats and dogs in the cabin. They only accept pets at the counter for active-duty US Department of Foreign Service and US Military officers who are on their duty; however, it is chargeable. The airline allows full-trained service dogs to fly in the cabin free of cost.

American airlines allows pets on almost all their flights up to 12 hours or the ones they are to or from the below locations:

Carry-on Pets

The airline allows you to bring 1 kennel inside the cabin if you pay the carry-on pets fee and your pet must stay inside the kennel through the flight duration in front of your seat. If you're traveling with a pet inside the cabin, you can only bring a personal item but you cannot get carry-on baggage allowance. The following are the kennel requirements that you must follow if you’re traveling with carry-on pets:

Hard-sided kennel
  • 19 x 13 x 9 inches for Mainline flights on America
  • 16 x 12 x 8 inches for Regional flights on American Eagle
Soft-sided kennel
  • 18 x 11 x 11 inches, it is the most widely recommended option for all travelers in American Airlines.

The size of your pet must coincide with the dimensions of the kennel. The overall weight of the kennel and the pet must not exceed 20 lbs. The airline only accepts 7 kennels on American flights and 5 kennels on American Eagle flights and only 1 in First. The underseat storage space is minimal in few aircrafts of First and Business Class, in such case, pets are not allowed.

Checked Pets

The airline accepts checked pets for active-duty US Department of Foreign Service and US Military officers that too only on official orders. You can check a maximum of 2 pets at least 48 hours prior to your travel and must have a health certificate of the pet. The kennel guidelines for checked pets are as follows:

  • Kennel must be large enough for the pet to move around.
  • Overall weight of kennel and pet must not be over 100 lbs
  • It must have a door made of welded or cast metal.
  • It must have packed food for the pet.
  • The kennel must have ventilation on 3 sides.
  • If you're traveling with two pets, they should be of the same species and each of them must be less than 20 pounds and age between 8 weeks and 6 months.

Flight Change Policy

The flight change policy of American Airlines is as follows:

  • If you're having a Basic Economy Ticket, you cannot change your flight.
  • If you're changing your flight, your new flight must be scheduled within one year of your original ticket date.
  • You may have to pay flight change fees.
  • If you wish to make same day flight changes then you can confirm a seat on a different flight on your departure date if seats are available on the new aircraft.
  • For same day flight change, the arrival and departure airports must be same and it can only be confirmed within 24 hours of the new flight.
  • If you're unable to make a flight change on the same day, then the airline puts you on a stand-by for an earlier flight on the same route on your departure date; however, this doesn't guarantee a seat on other flight.
  • The standby policy will only apply when you're traveling within the Caribbean, Canada, the US, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

The cancellation and refund policies of American Airlines are:

  • If you’ve booked your ticket 2 days before your departure date, you’ve 24 hours time from the time of your booking to cancel your ticket and avail off full refund without any cancellation fees.
  • If you’ve received a travel credit against cancellation you must preserve the cancellation email to book a flight with American Airlines in the future.
  • If you’ve paid any amount for bags and seats then it is non-refundable.
  • Your refund will be done by the airline to your original form of payment upon request.
